The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a flagship maternity benefit program launched by the Government of India to provide financial assistance to pregnant and lactating women. Aimed at ensuring the health and well-being of mothers and their infants, the scheme strives to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates by providing support during the crucial stages of pregnancy and early motherhood.

PMMVY was introduced with a range of objectives aimed at improving the overall health and nutrition of pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as promoting early care practices for newborns. Some of the key objectives of the scheme include:

  • Providing Financial Support: PMMVY offers direct cash incentives to eligible pregnant and lactating women to meet their nutritional needs and medical expenses.
  • Reducing Maternal and Infant Mortality: By ensuring proper care and nutrition during pregnancy and postpartum, the scheme contributes to a reduction in maternal and infant mortality rates.
  • Promoting Institutional Delivery: The scheme encourages women to give birth in healthcare institutions, which helps in improving the quality of care and reducing the risks associated with home deliveries.
  • Enhancing Maternal Nutrition: PMMVY seeks to improve the nutritional status of mothers by providing them with financial assistance to meet their dietary requirements.
  • Promoting Exclusive Breastfeeding: The scheme educates mothers about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, leading to better infant health.

  3. Institutional Delivery: The first installment of the incentive is given to women who opt for institutional deliveries, promoting safe childbirth practices.
  4. Registration and Implementation: Beneficiaries can register for PMMVY at Anganwadi Centers or approved healthcare institutions. The scheme is implemented through the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) platform.
  5. Flexibility in Applying: The scheme allows women to apply within 730 days from the date of their last menstrual period, ensuring coverage for a broader range of cases.

While PMMVY has made significant strides in improving maternal and child health, there have been challenges in its implementation. These challenges include issues related to awareness, timely disbursal of incentives, and the need for increased healthcare infrastructure. Nonetheless, the scheme has positively impacted maternal and child health outcomes across the country. By providing financial assistance and encouraging proper healthcare practices, PMMVY has contributed to increased institutional deliveries, improved maternal nutrition, and enhanced infant care.
